About Our Austrian Field Poppy Farm | Papaver Rhoeas | Lower Austria
Our Family Farm in Lower Austria: Growing Papaver Rhoeas Since 1998
Located in the rolling hills of Lower Austria, our farm has specialized in Papaver rhoeas — the common field poppy — for over 25 years. We are a registered Austrian agricultural business focused exclusively on legal ornamental flowers for florists, wedding designers, and craft makers across Europe.
We do NOT grow Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) and have never cultivated narcotic plants.
Meet the Farmers
My name is Artis, and together with my family, I manage 12 hectares dedicated to Papaver rhoeas and companion flowers like wheat, lavender, and cornflowers. We’re a 3rd generation farming family. My grandfather started with grain in 1952. We planted our first field poppies in 1998 when Austrian florists asked for local, sustainable dried flowers.

Why We Only Grow Papaver Rhoeas Field Poppies
Papaver rhoeas is the iconic red poppy of European meadows. It’s legally distinct from Papaver somniferum in 3 key ways:
| Factor | Papaver rhoeas – Our Crop | Papaver somniferum – We Don’t Grow This |
| Legal Status | Ornamental plant, EU-approved | Controlled substance in most countries |
| Opiate Content | No significant alkaloids | Contains morphine/codeine |
| EU Regulation | EC No 338/97 – Legal trade | 1961 UN Convention – Restricted |
| Our Use | Dried flowers, crafts, decor | Not applicable to our farm |
Every batch we ship includes a phytosanitary certificate from AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety) confirming species as Papaver rhoeas for ornamental use only.
Our Sustainable Growing & Drying Process
May-June: We sow P. rhoeas seeds in unsprayed meadow sections. No pesticides used — field poppies thrive with beneficial insects.
July-August: Hand-harvested at peak maturity when pods are firm but stems still green.
August-September: Naturally air-dried in our Austrian barns for 6-8 weeks. No artificial heat = better color retention.
September: Hand-sorted by size. Shaken to remove loose debris for clean crafting. Packed in kraft paper.
This slow process gives you muted beige-to-taupe pods that last 3+ years in arrangements. No dyes, no chemicals.
